If Your Friend Jumps off a Bridge … or a Wall …

Coming from the East Coast, I have on at least one occasion found myself in the water being wrenched by an unseen force, not remotely paranormal, known as an undercurrent.  Why do you care? I know, it seems odd to be discussing something like this here in a blog where Spirit is supposed to use my words to enlighten you, often me as well, but that is coming, I am almost certain.

Having ventured with a group from my church youth group to a local dam most were entertaining themselves by jumping off the concrete wall into the deep-water pit below. A few others climbed the steep dirt slop and were now sliding down the algae slicked dam. Typical childhood nonsense, that looking back I am surprised our youth group took us there but, I am old, and we did stuff like that with out a second thought.

At first, the thrill of jumping from heights into the unknown below was tantalizing and enthralled me as I felt with each jump, I was over coming an unknown, invisible fear that ultimately made the first jump a knee shaking adventure, that because of Jaw and my fear of murky water I had to talk myself into.  After several jumps the thrill faded quickly, I became more intrigued by those sliding down the dam. Feeling invincible, full of the knowledge I learned from plugging off the wall and caring the energy of conquering my fear, I marched up the dirt slope. With, what I am sure was a wild girl, free spirit grin on my face and full of arrogance I propelled my body down the incline into the depths below.

This is where the fun ends and the arrogance of my ego was instantaneously cleansed by an important life lesson. It was in that imaginary prolonged interval of never-ending time I found my physical body being manipulated and trapped in the current of the toe drain outlet. I watched from above my body and through confusion as my physical self-struggled to free itself from the current, my lungs began to burn and ache for air. It was then I was whiplashed back through the churning, becoming dizzy when through a glowing haze I saw an arm haloed in light plummet into the water and pull me free. I still have no recollection of who that was, for as a rose from the depths I recall I stood alone, surrounded by people unaware of my previous plight.

The point of this, the takeaway if it is not already clear is that as we take on our journey, face our fears and grow we will be recalled to reevaluate our ego, move into other lessons and through new fears but that Spirit is with us. When, with the attitude of teenage arrogance, like what I held, thinking I had mastered all, we, you venture down your journey’s path, Spirit will bring in a lesson meant to teach or reteach that which you thought you had nothing left to learn and the lesson will be swift and unapologetic. Sounds scary, I know. Focus on the fact that Spirit, like that arm reaching into depths to pull my head above water will do the same for you, none of us walks our path alone.
